Once upon a time there was a magical world called Xeriad, and some pretty interested
folks lived there.
The Elves
guarded their enchanted glades and were enthralled by nature.
The Dwarves
scoured the world for knowledge and were enthralled by technology.
The Gnomes roamed
far and wide selling their wares and were enthralled by treasure.
The Ogres
rumbled and fought for glory, turf, or out of sheer boredom and were enthralled
by chaos.
Things went along pretty well in those days, with
everyone doing their own thing and keeping pretty much to themselves. The skies
were blue and the grass was green.
And then the Humans
came.
As Humans tended to do, they began forming an expansive
and impressive empire. Not a problem, really, since there was plenty of land to
go around. Over time, the industrious and ambitious Humans began to dabble in
the mysteries of Arcane Magic,
craving and coveting the power that such strange arts promised. It was not long
before even modest towns had magical colleges. Now this was quite the problem, since Arcane Magic
conjured the very forces of creation, which, by nature, were volatile and
terribly powerful energies.
After some time, the other 4 great civilizations of the
world decided to be good neighbors and warn the Humans about their course of
action. See, compared to everyone else, the Humans hadn’t been around very
long, and like a small child, didn’t know what they were dealing with. The
Humans smiled and assured the Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Ogres of Xeriad that
they knew exactly what they were doing, and continued with their magical
obsession.
Years passed and the Humans had built a mighty kingdom
that they named Arcanica. Its
castles and Wizard towers were truly a sight to be seen in those days, I would
imagine.
By now, Humans had mastered many disciplines of magical
study, and soon you had all sorts of splinter groups who practiced their own
sort of sorcery that they felt was superior. Groups of Wizards congregated into
Covens and practiced their own flavor of Arcane Magic, and soon these
philosophical differences turned into an all out war for magical supremacy that
fractured the grand empire of Arcanica, as well as the world.
Now, when a Kingdom enthralled by Arcane Magic goes to
war with itself, you can imagine that spells would fly every which way, and
they certainly did. In fact, so much Arcane Magical energy was unleashed upon
the world at the same time caused a sort of backlash that washed the world in
warped, twisted energy.
This world-shattering magical cataclysm will be forever
known as The Grand Bang. Some say
that the Grand Bang was caused by the Humans draining the last drop of magic
from the world during their great Spell Wars, but the truth may never be known.
Whatever the true cause of the disaster, the fact was that the entire world was
forever altered as a result of the Human’s hubris and obsession with magic.
Legend has it that the sun exploded into several boiling fragments that can
still be seen to this day littering the smoldering sky. Arcanica was leveled in
an instant, and the vast majority of the Human race was incinerated in the
blink of an eye. Countless lives were snuffed out in an instant, and the warped
energies turned what was once a lush and fertile planet into a chaotic mess of
glowing green seas, barren wastelands and hideously warped wildlife.
The world sizzled for about one thousand years, and the
survivors of the Grand Bang and their offspring emerged to a completely
different world.
The lush world of Xeriad was dead, and Planet X was born.
